We used to eat out often, but that was over a decade ago. Back then we lived in the Seattle area and there were quite a few favorites. Here in Idaho we haven’t found as many favorite places to eat, but the list is growing. To make our list we have to really enjoy the atmosphere and the food combination because we have the very best food available right in our own kitchen. Date nights/lunch are a toss up, but we have to be even more picky when all eight of us (includes Grandma) go out for a family meal. Here are just a few of our top picks:
#1. Mai Thai in downtown Boise. I love Thai food! When we lived in Washington state my husband had yet to be converted to Thai eating. I was fortunate to find a wonderful woman 60+ years my senior who wanted to be my lunch date buddy every other month. We would meet at her favorite Thai place. She would tell me about her adventures as a missionary in the Philippine jungle. Great memories! At Mai Thai you can easily see that they care about the food. My first lunch was the Organic Bento Box. Most things on the menu are not organic, but the greens and tofu seem to be and they advertise better choices for sourcing their menu than most other restaurants. The price is also fantastic for what you get compared to other local Thai restaurants. Read more here: http://www.maithaigroup.com/experience/all-natural-organic-and-ethical-treatment-of-animals/
#2. 36th Street Bistro is just an all around beautiful place to visit. It is a destination within itself even if it is out of the way from where we live. Beyond the great atmosphere, the food is very good. I love seasonal menus and theirs always has something new. They use organic greens and many local/natural ingredients such as highland beef raised in the foothills and northwest caught fish. Right now they have Southwest Spiced Salmon on organic greens tossed in blackberry vinaigrette with spiced cashews and goat cheese. Just writing that made me want to jump in the car and take a little drive for a bite. They also have fantastic events such as Mothers Day Brunch, Local Wine Dinners and an upcoming Food Truck event Fathers Day weekend. http://www.36streetgardencenter.com/
#3. Kahootz Steak and Ale in Meridian is a meat lovers dream. Although the web site doesn’t specifically say this we have been told that they buy local grass fed beef. In any case my husband is a meat and potatoes kind of guy and he loves this place. http://kahootzsteak.com/about.htm
#4. Red Feather Lounge and Bittercreek Ale House have a big reputation. Most locals know about this place because it was one of the first and best known restaurants with emphasis on local food. http://bcrfl.com/
#5. The Fork in downtown Boise is a newer restaurant with a local food focus. The food is good and maybe that is why so many people we know who are not interested in local or natural food still frequently eat here. http://boisefork.com/
